JHELISA OXYGEN

The eleven-minute-long ‘Oxygen’ is an indulgent masterpiece from Jhelisa. The lengthy opus is a hypnotic journey through well-balanced styles and timbres. It opens with an eclectic saxophone solo placed over repeating percussive beats, before introducing African chants, bluesy harmonica improvisation and, of course, Jhelisa’s deep, emotional voice. Her melody lines are unmistakable, and explain her presence on tracks from the likes of Massive Attack and Bjork. She describes this piece a “my outpouring of growth; my influences, perceptions, my angles and transitions that began with surviving Hurricane Katrina in 2005, to navigating the hyper-polarized fragments of American politics over the decades". Her new album, Wild Orbits, comes out this year. -Dan Peeke.
